File on HITAX / Hawaii Tax Online

The State of Hawaii’s own site is the official way to e-file GET. There is no software subscription.

hitax.hawaii.gov Hawaii Tax Online

You file Form G-45 (periodic) and Form G-49 (annual) yourself. This is the right path if you can sit down on the 20th.

  • Paper is still allowed for some filers. Monthly filers — expected annual GET over $4,000 — must e-file on Hawaii Tax Online.
  • Official GET page (last updated August 27, 2026): tax.hawaii.gov/get/
  • County surcharge page (last updated January 9, 2024): tax.hawaii.gov/geninfo/countysurcharge/

GET is not a sales tax

It is a tax on the business. A business may pass the cost on, but does not have to. If it does, that amount is still part of gross receipts.

People often say “Oahu 4% + 0.5%.” Use the official wording: 4.5%* for retail goods and services, renting, leasing real property, construction contracting, commissions, and all others. The asterisk is the 0.5% county surcharge.

The surcharge does not apply to the 0.5% wholesale/producing rate or the 0.15% insurance-commission rate.

Official rates, due dates, and the license

County surcharge

0.5%
all four counties

The county surcharge page lists 0.5% in Honolulu, Kauai, Hawaii, and Maui through December 31, 2030.

Maximum pass-on printed there for the current 0.5% period: 4.7120%.

Form G-45

Due the 20th after the period ends. If the 20th is a weekend or holiday, the next business day. The official GET page does not list an extension.

Frequency comes from expected annual GET liability:

  • Semi-annual if ≤ $2,000 (example: January–June due July 20)
  • Quarterly if ≤ $4,000 (example: January–March due April 20)
  • Monthly if > $4,000 (example: January due February 20). Monthly filers must e-file on Hawaii Tax Online.

Zero returns are still required.

Form G-49

Due the 20th of the fourth month after year-end. Calendar-year filers: April 20.

License and penalties

License: Form BB-1, one-time $20. Extra locations or trade names: Form G-50, no extra charge on the official page.

DOTAX prints late-file, late-pay, interest, e-file, and Part V penalties on the GET page; read them there.

Optional software

You do not need software to file GET. Two products publish public Hawaii pages. Figures below were taken from those pages on August 29, 2026, Hawaii time. The DAVO sign-up link below is a paid referral. Quaderno has no referral link yet.

This page includes paid affiliate / referral links; if you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Short scan only. Details and sources are below. Official HITAX has no software fee.
